If you're considering a move from California to Arizona, the tax savings alone are enough to stop you in your tracks. People talk about it in general terms "Arizona has lower taxes" but most articles never actually show you the real numbers. This post does. I'm going to break down every major tax category, show you exactly what the difference looks like at different income levels, and help you understand the full financial picture of what a move to Arizona actually means for your wallet.
Spoiler: the savings are bigger than most people expect

Income Tax: The Biggest Difference by Far
This is where California and Arizona are furthest apart, and it's the number that makes California transplants' jaws drop when they see it.

California has one of the most aggressive progressive income tax systems in the country. The top marginal rate is 13.3% the highest state income tax rate in the United States. On top of that, California automatically withholds 1.3% from every paycheck for State Disability Insurance (SDI) with no wage cap. So even before you factor in other taxes, a high earner in California is sending a significant portion of every paycheck to Sacramento.

Arizona made a landmark change in 2023 that transformed it into one of the most tax-competitive states in the country. Arizona now has a flat 2.5% income tax rate on all taxable income the lowest flat income tax rate of any state in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation's 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index. Every dollar you earn is taxed at the same 2.5%. No brackets, no surprises.

Here's what that gap looks like in real dollars:
If you earn $80,000 per year, California taxes roughly $74,000 of that after their standard deduction putting your state tax bill in the mid-$3,000 range. Arizona taxes roughly $64,000 of that at 2.5%, resulting in a tax bill of about $1,600. That's a savings of approximately $1,700 per year on income taxes alone before accounting for California's SDI withholding, which adds another $1,040 on that same income. Total difference: roughly $2,700 per year just from income and payroll taxes.

At $100,000 income, the annual savings grows to approximately $3,262 per year.
At $150,000 income, you save approximately $7,241 per year.
At $250,000 income, the difference is nearly $20,000 per year.

The higher your income, the more dramatic the California penalty becomes because California's tax brackets keep climbing while Arizona's 2.5% stays flat no matter what you earn. For tech workers, executives, business owners, and anyone earning over $200,000, the income tax savings from moving to Arizona can be genuinely life-changing over a decade.

Property Tax: Arizona Wins Here Too
This one is a little more nuanced, and it's important to understand it correctly before you make assumptions.

California has Proposition 13, which caps property tax at 1% of the purchase price and limits increases to 2% per year regardless of how much the home appreciates in value. This sounds like a great deal and for people who bought their homes 20 or 30 years ago, it is. But for new buyers entering the California market today, Prop 13 doesn't help you at all. You're assessed at today's purchase price, and that means on an $800,000 home in California, you're paying about $5,600 per year in property taxes at the 0.7% effective rate.

Arizona averages an effective property tax rate of approximately 0.62% lower than California's effective rate and Arizona does not tax groceries or prescription medications, which keeps the overall household tax burden lower.

On a $500,000 home in Arizona, you're paying roughly $3,100 per year in property taxes. On a comparable $500,000 home in California, you'd pay closer to $3,500 per year. That's a modest difference at the same price point — but here's the key: in most California markets, a $500,000 home barely exists. The home you're comparing is more likely a $900,000 to $1.3 million California property versus a $450,000 to $550,000 Arizona property. On those terms, the property tax savings in Arizona are substantial.

One important note: unlike California's Prop 13, Arizona property taxes can adjust as market values change. Your tax bill may rise over time as your home appreciates. This is worth factoring into your long-term budget planning.

Sales Tax: California is Higher, But Arizona Isn't Cheap
Sales tax is the one area where Arizona doesn't win by a landslide but California still comes out higher overall.

California's statewide base sales tax is 7.25% the highest base rate in the nation. Local add-ons push the combined rate above 10% in many cities across Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Some areas of LA County have combined rates of 10.25% or higher.

Arizona's statewide base rate is 5.6%, and with local add-ons the combined average is approximately 8.52%. In Phoenix specifically, the combined rate sits around 8.6%–9.1% depending on the city. That's lower than most California urban areas, but not dramatically so.

Where you really notice the difference is in what Arizona doesn't tax. Arizona exempts most groceries and prescription medications from sales tax entirely. California taxes groceries at lower rates in many cases, but the cumulative effect of California's higher base rate on every other purchase adds up meaningfully over a full year of spending.

Gas Tax: One of the Most Noticeable Day-to-Day Differences
This one is visible every time you fill up your tank, and California residents moving to Arizona consistently comment on the shock of seeing gas prices here.

California's gas tax is 70.92 cents per gallon one of the highest in the country. Combined with California's environmental fees and other fuel levies, it's not unusual to see gas at $5, $6, or even higher per gallon in parts of California.

Arizona's gas tax is 18 cents per gallon. That's less than a quarter of California's rate.
If you drive 15,000 miles per year in a vehicle that gets 25 miles per gallon, you're buying about 600 gallons of gas annually. The difference in gas tax alone between the two states amounts to roughly $310 per year. And since pump prices in Arizona tend to run $1.50 to $2.50 less per gallon than California, the real-world savings at the pump for the average driver can easily run $1,000 to $2,000 per year depending on how much you drive.

Retirement: Arizona is Exceptionally Friendly
For retirees or anyone planning for retirement, Arizona's tax treatment is one of the best in the country.

Arizona does not tax Social Security benefits. California does it's one of the minority of states that taxes Social Security income.

Arizona does not have an estate tax or inheritance tax. When you pass assets to your heirs, the state of Arizona takes nothing. California also has no estate tax at the state level, so this one is a tie.

Arizona does not tax military retirement pay. This is a meaningful benefit for veterans choosing where to retire.

Arizona offers favorable treatment for other retirement income, including pensions and distributions from retirement accounts, with various deductions available depending on the source of income.

For a retiree receiving $50,000 per year in Social Security and pension income, the combination of Arizona's 2.5% flat rate and its exemptions can result in a significantly lower tax bill than what that same retiree would face in California.

The Full Picture: What Does This Mean in Real Life?
Let's put it all together for a typical California family considering a move to the Phoenix metro area.

Take a dual-income household earning a combined $180,000 per year, buying a home in the $550,000 range, and spending a typical amount on everyday purchases. In California, that family is paying the state's progressive income tax rates on both incomes, a gas tax that's nearly four times Arizona's, sales taxes of 9.5–10%+ on most purchases, and roughly $3,500–$5,000 per year in property taxes on a California home worth considerably more.

In Arizona, the same family pays 2.5% flat on all income, an 8.5% combined sales tax rate on most purchases (with groceries exempt), roughly $3,100 per year in property taxes on a comparable home at a lower purchase price, and substantially less at the gas pump every week.

When you add it all up income tax, SDI savings, gas, and property tax on comparable housing a family in that income range moving from a major California metro to Phoenix is typically looking at $8,000 to $15,000 per year in total tax and cost savings, depending on their specific situation.

That's not a rounding error. That's a car payment. A college fund contribution. A family vacation every year. Real money that stays in your household instead of going to Sacramento.

One Thing to Watch: California's Long Arm
If you're a high earner making the move from California, there is one critical issue you need to be aware of: California is notoriously aggressive about auditing people who claim to have left the state.

California's Franchise Tax Board (FTB) will investigate whether your domicile truly changed if your income is high enough to make pursuit worthwhile. Remote workers need to be especially careful if your employer has California offices and you occasionally visit for meetings, California may attempt to claim a portion of your income as California-sourced. The safest approach is to establish a clear, documented Arizona residency: get your Arizona driver's license promptly, register your vehicles here, update voter registration, open local accounts, and consult a CPA or tax attorney who specializes in multi-state moves if your income is above $300,000.

This isn't meant to scare you  hundreds of thousands of Californians have made this move cleanly and are happily keeping more of their money in Arizona. It just requires doing it right.

Frequently Asked Questions: Arizona vs. California Taxes

Does Arizona tax Social Security? No. Arizona does not tax Social Security benefits. California does, which is a significant advantage for retirees moving to Arizona.
Is Arizona a good state for high earners? Yes, especially compared to California. Arizona's 2.5% flat tax means a $250,000 earner saves approximately $20,000 per year in state income taxes compared to California. The higher your income, the more dramatic the savings.

What is Arizona's property tax rate compared to California? Arizona's effective property tax rate averages around 0.62%, compared to California's approximately 0.70%. Both are relatively low compared to national averages. The bigger advantage for Arizona buyers is that the homes themselves cost significantly less, so the property tax bill in dollar terms is typically much lower.

Does Arizona have an estate tax? No. Arizona has no estate tax and no inheritance tax, making it favorable for wealth transfer planning.

How does Arizona's sales tax compare to California? Arizona's combined state and local average sales tax is approximately 8.52%, compared to California's average of 8.98% with local add-ons pushing many areas above 10%.
Arizona also exempts groceries and prescription medications from sales tax, which California does not do at the same level.

Is it worth moving from California to Arizona just for tax savings? For many people especially families, high earners, remote workers, and retirees the tax savings alone represent tens of thousands of dollars over a few years
. Combined with significantly lower home prices, lower cost of living, and no state income tax on Social Security, the financial case for moving from California to Arizona is one of the strongest in the country.
